How A Wedding at 620 Loft & Garden Came Together
It was the hottest May day New York had seen all month, and Frank and Lailina were getting married at 620 Loft & Garden.I'd wanted to plan a wedding there since I started in 2013. I'd walked the space more times than I can count and knew its rhythms well. None of that helped when, coffee in hand that morning, I learned that a parade had closed Fifth Avenue from 59th Street down to 50th: the entire stretch between the couple's hotel and their venue.The Set Up - Watch Video
The timeline we'd built so carefully stopped working. We had a sizable production and roughly 20 vendors whose load-ins, arrivals, and handoffs all depended on streets that were no longer open. We also had a couple who had decided, long before anyone mentioned a parade, to travel from the St. Regis to their ceremony in a classic yellow cab. So the morning was spent re-sequencing deliveries, rerouting arrivals, and finding a way through the barricades for one very important taxi.
Our guests never saw any of it, and the credit for that belongs to the vendors. Every one of them adjusted without complaint and without losing a step, and the day ran as if the parade had never been scheduled.
I've kept one lesson from that morning. On a wedding day, the planner sets the temperature for the whole team. If I'm rattled, twenty vendors feel it within minutes. If I'm calm, and have a revised plan ready, they bring their best work. A plan matters, but so does how you carry yourself when it falls apart.
